The Italian Cruise Ship Mysterious Hijacking
The Italian Cruise Ship Mysterious Hijacking | On October 7, 1985, the Italian cruise ship MS Achille Lauro was violently hijacked in the Mediterranean by four Palestinian Liberation Front (PLF) militants. They took hundreds of passengers and crew hostage, demanding the release of Palestinian prisoners in Israel. After their demands were not met, the terrorists tragically murdered Leon Klinghoffer, a wheelchair-bound Jewish-American passenger, and threw his body overboard. The crisis escalated into an international diplomatic and military crisis, culminating in a dramatic US Navy F-14 fighter jet interception of the hijackers' Egyptian escape plane, forcing it to land in Italy and sparking the Sigonella Crisis standoff between American and Italian forces over custody.
