The journey of bicycle innovation began in 1817 with the Draisine (running machine), a steerable, pedal-less wooden frame. The 1860s brought the velocipede or "Boneshaker" with pedals directly on the front wheel. This quickly evolved into the fast but dangerous Penny-Farthing (1870s) with its large front wheel. The biggest leap was the Safety Bicycle in 1885, which introduced two equal-sized wheels, a lower center of gravity, and a chain-driven rear wheel—establishing the modern bicycle blueprint. This was soon perfected with pneumatic tires (1888), making the ride comfortable and sparking a global craze. Subsequent innovations focused on materials (aluminum, carbon fiber) and specialization (mountain, road, electric bikes).
