THE STORY BEHIND SARAH KOSAR | Surah Al-Kawthar is the 108th and shortest chapter of the Quran, consisting of only three verses. Revealed in Mecca, it was a message of profound consolation and reassurance to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during a time of immense personal grief and hardship. The name "Al-Kawthar" means "abundant goodness" or "plenty." The Surah begins by promising the Prophet this abundant goodness, which is widely understood to refer to a river in Paradise, as well as a multitude of blessings in this life and the hereafter. The second verse instructs the Prophet to pray and offer sacrifices to his Lord alone, as an act of gratitude for these blessings. The final verse addresses the Prophet's enemies who had mocked him for the loss of his sons, calling him "Al-Abtar" (one who is cut off or without offspring). The Surah declares that it is, in fact, his enemy who will be cut off from all goodness and legacy. In essence, Surah Al-Kawthar provides a powerful lesson that true legacy is not defined by material wealth or male descendants, but by the spiritual blessings and the enduring impact of one's faith and message. It serves as a source of comfort and a reminder to be grateful and devoted to God, regardless of life's trials.
